An amateur radio outdoor event that has hams operating in the field from geographic features or locations with 'devil' in the name such as:

  • Devil's PunchBowl
  • Diablo Canyon
  • Devil's Tower
  • Devil's Fingers

are just a few places that come to mind.  Operators would set up their 'devil station' at such places and make as many amateur radio contacts as possible in a 24 hour period.  Bonus points will be awarded for operating in the field and using the devil feature itself as part of the antenna in some way.

The National Database of Names contains lists of places and things that have devil in the name.  Using this link you can query for locations and features in your state and county.  Clicking below will launch a new window so you can find places near you.  You can even select Google Maps to learn how to get to where you're going to operate:

Launch USGS Geographic Names Database Query Form

In the first field 'FEATURE NAME" type in ' devil ', select your state and county and then click 'send query'.  You will see a list of places and their coordinates to help you find a suitable location near you where you can operate.  Click on one of the mapping services on the right of the results screen to see a map.

Anyone can operate in "CQ Diablo! event either as a Devil Station or a general participant.  However, only a devil station can call "CQ Diablo". Devil stations can also answer a CQ of another devil station.  Participants can only answer a CQ, they cannot initiate a QSO.

  • Devil Station:  Call, RST, Location
  • General Participant: Call, RST, Sequence number.

Scoring:

  • 1 point per QSO regardless of mode.
  • 100 bonus points for being at a geographic location with devil in the name.
  • 200 bonus points for attaching the antenna to the devil feature in some way.

FIRST PLACE PRIZE:  Round Trip Ticket to the Moon!

CQ Diablo will take place October 21 and 22nd, 2006. To join the event and reserve your location, click here or the link at the top of the page. Devil Stations will also get a beautiful CQ Diablo T-Shirt ABSOLUTELY FREE when they sign up for the event.
